Join us for a Sacred Season: Time for reflection and dedication In 2021, almost every region felt the impacts of climate change. There was Hurricane Ida in Latin America, flash floods in Germany and Belgium, extreme rain in China, wildfires in Greece and Turkey, and heat waves in Africa and the Middle East. In Indonesia, where I live, 7 out of 10 disasters we experience are related to climate change. Almost every week, I hear news about farmers who cannot harvest and fishermen who cannot go to sea due to extreme weather. The island of Java, my home, is predicted to sink in the next 10 to 20 years due to sea level rise. Sometimes I am afraid of what will happen next. I pray to God regarding my fear of natural disasters and the climate crisis. Sacred Season is a chance to reflect together with people of diverse faiths on what we have been through in 2021, to bring the light of faith as a reminder of our role in protecting the environment, and to take action for change for climate justice, such as by devoting prayers or rituals rooted in eco-spiritualities. Join us on Monday, Feb 7, 2022. A verse in the Holy Qur'an states: “Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of the people have earned, so that Allah makes them taste some of what they did, in order that they may return to the right path.” This verse reminds me of the climate crisis as a consequence of human behavior itself. The disasters we experience are reminders for us to return to the right path, including changing our attitudes. In less than two months, Muslims around the world will enter the sacred month of Ramadan. This month is an important opportunity to return and realize our role as Guardians of the Earth, who have the responsibility to protect the earth and establish climate justice. In commemoration of this important moment, along with people of faith from diverse religions who are also entering religious observances, will you come to the launch call to faithfully respond to climate injustice on February 7? Preventing climate change requires holistic awareness and movement. It's no longer about me, you, my community, or your community, but how together we must make changes and take actions for a just transition for all. Finally, I believe nothing is a coincidence–including this invitation that arrives in your inbox. Wassalaam, Faiza Fauziah |
