Retired First Sergeant William Love was killed on  June 1, 2022 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. WCC NEWS: Manager of New Imperial Hotel in Jerusalem: “We don’t need any more sympathy—we need action”

As a six-year-old boy, Abu El Walid Dajani began helping his father manage the New Imperial Hotel near Jaffa Gate, Jerusalem. The historic property is owned by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate, and leased before 1967 to the Dajani family to run as a hotel.  Now 77, Dajani has become the manager. But the threat of eviction is derailing a way of life his family has known for generations.

“I come to the New Imperial Hotel every day. This is where my story is,” he said. “This is where my life is.”

But, due to a recent court order—building off of 17 years of previous legal battles before that—life has taken a turn toward an oppressive uncertainty. On 8 June, the Israeli Supreme Court issued a decision rejecting the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem's latest attempts to annul the ruling issued against it in July 2017, through which the radical Israeli organisation Ateret Cohanim succeeded in expropriating the properties of the patriarchate at Jaffa Gate. One of those properties is the New Imperial Hotel.

The decision came despite a legal battle waged by the patriarchate for the past 17 years—a battle to reverse a manipulated deal to lease the property to Ateret Cohanim, a deal that usually should have passed through the Holy Synod to be ratified. In this case it did not.

The latest decision of the Israeli Supreme Court, Dajani explained, is laid out in an 800-page document.

But the human face of these pages is drawn in Dajani’s worried eyes, and how he finds it difficult to sleep at night. Part of a longstanding Muslim family in Jerusalem, Dajani finds himself defending the hotel and the other Christian-owned properties not only as a way to preserve his way of life but to preserve religious acceptance in a sacred land. The longstanding tenant has become a guardian because of his family’s long-term lease and partnership with the Patriarchate.

Time for action

By now he’s done with expressions of sympathy. He wants action. “I want President Biden to come here, meet with the heads of churches for five or ten minutes, and I want him to assure them that Christianity will remain in Jaffa Gate and remain in the Holy Land,” he said. “This is really an immediate need.”

In 2005, the historic New Imperial Hotel and the nearby Petra Hotel, located at the entrance to Jaffa Gate, a well-known and central part of the Christian Quarter in the Old city of Jerusalem, were allegedly leased for 99 years against $1.25 million and $500,000 respectively by three offshore companies.

Dajani calls that original purchase “a conspiracy done though embezzlement” that  released a cascade of injustice that grows ever-heavier. “We need the full support of the Christian world to take action and bring justice,” he said.

Where is the Christian world?

In fact, sometimes he wonders if his Christian brothers and sisters really know what’s going on for people like him: people trying to go to work, live in their homes, or exist on land that, for many, has been in their families for generations.

“I am asking: where is the Christian world on this issue?” said Dajani. “I know people have the right to buy property—but not to sign documents through embezzling and blackmailing.”

He wants the world to understand how these kinds of court decisions impact normal people. As the heads of churches in Jerusalem cry for justice, so does he.

“This is unbelievable,” he said. “Why don’t they leave us alone? This is a great insult to all the intelligent people in the world. Christians in Jerusalem should have the support not only of the Christian world but also the support of the Muslim world.”

At night, Dajani thinks about the 800-page court order. “I don’t need 800 pages,” he said. “I only need an answer to the question: Does the Dajani family have a right to work here—or not? Do I have a right to run my everyday business without this nightmare? I am a human being, not a court document.”

Dajani wants to manage a hotel in peace. “I hope there will be enough support from the Christian churches to put pressure on the Israeli government to protect these properties in Jaffa Gate—and any other property,” he said. “I have four children, and the eldest is 50 years old—for two years we’ve been almost in bankruptcy.”

At this point, Dajani wants more than a wish for peace—he wants a strategy and a strong leader to carry it out. “Who is this leader? Who will take this on? Enough is enough.”

WCC NEWS: Lighting the lives of many

Empowering underprivileged women and their children to alleviate poverty was the main topic of one of the confessional meetings held during the World Council of Churches (WCC) central committee meeting in mid-June.

Founded by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of Malabar, India, in 1994, the Navjeevan Centre has pioneered a holistic approach to social transformation, in which development of children through education, healthcare, food and shelter plays a pivotal role. WCC central committee member, Bishop Dr Isaac Mar Philoxenos, describes the work of the centre as an expression of “God’s love in action, bringing light to the lives of many.”

“It is about empowering children to alleviate poverty and enable them to lead a life of dignity,” he explains.

It all began by reaching out to women and their children in the red-light district of Mumbai, where many were trapped and exploited in the commercial sex industry. By providing opportunities for women to give up their demeaning occupation and work towards integrating them into society as a family, the Navjeevan project has gradually brought meaning and dignity back to thousands of women. And at the same time saved their children from ending up in the same trade.

By providing programmes for both children and their mothers, as well as village outreach programmes aiming at achieving self-sufficiency through sustainable growth, a holistic approach to social transformation is taken.

“Poverty can only be alleviated by addressing its roots. First of all, children need shelter, food, care and compassion in order to develop, secondly, they need education. The community aspect is extremely important in order to convince women working in red-light areas to return to their villages – and in the long run to never leave their villages in the first place,” Philoxenos explains.
The main strength of these programmes, as he sees it, is that they are saving thousands of lives in the red-light areas and that they provide hope for a better life for underprivileged and commercially sexually exploited women and their children.

By targeting both the root of the problem and the misery it entails, the Navjeevan project has inspired churches around the globe to launch similar programmes.

Also, emanating from the Navjeevan project, is the Light to Life India, a project of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church, focusing on social transformation and development of communities through education of children.

“Although, there have been many hurdles to overcome, these programmes have served as models for social transformation. They have clearly had an impact and made a huge difference in many people’s lives. It is all about sharing God’s love, that we have received, through our actions by providing better opportunities for people in need. It is being a Christian witness by virtue,” Philoxenos concludes.

The moderator of this confessional meeting, Frederique Seidel, WCC senior programme executive and partnerships manager - Child Rights & Climate Solutions, agrees: “This is a very concrete example of Churches’ Commitments to Children, targeting several causes at the same time. Helping children out of the shadows and into the light, empowering them as actors in their communities, and transforming injustices is an approach which unites churches and partners towards a better future”, she says.

ErSO is a new class of drug being developed that has the potential to eradicate estrogen positive breast cancer. This drug could treat more than 70% of all breast cancers! ErSO was developed by scientists at the University of Illinois and is now being developed and tested by Systems Oncology.

ErSO is awaiting FDA clearance to start human trials. Those of us living with cancer, especially stage IV metastatic breast cancer (MBC), need trials fast tracked. Your action could very well save lives; 118 of us die from MBC every day in the US alone.

First complete this short form and in the "question or comment" section, urge the FDA to "expedite ErSO to human trials; we need new treatments for breast cancer."

Change.org Petition: Jailed 5 years without a trial - Protest This Human Rights Violation!

Tevin Hill was arrested in August of 2017. He has been in prison since then — 5 years of his life — but no charge against him has ever gone to trial. His sister started a petition because her family is out of options. Tevin’s constitutional right to due process is being violated, and it seems like there’s nothing they can do about it. Sign to call on Florida police to make this a fair trial or to let Tevin come home.

Hi, my name is Janecia Hill and my family needs your help. My brother, Tevin Hill has been incarcerated for 1,757 days with NO TRIAL DATE in sight. He was arrested for a crime he is innocent of and unfortunately there is a crime still unsolved today due to the lack of police work on behalf of the Dougherty County Police Department.

My brother is one of hundreds if not, thousands of men and women across the country who have been arrested and have their human rights stripped away. There is a HUGE injustice on both sides from policing to judiciary action. There is absolutely no reason it should take a case this long to make it to trial.

The Fourteenth Amendment, ratified in 1868, the Due Process Clause, to describe a legal obligation of all states.due process of law. n. a fundamental principle of fairness in all legal matters, both civil and criminal, especially in the courts. All legal procedures set by statute and court practice, including notice of rights, must be followed for each individual so that no prejudicial or unequal treatment will result.(https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/due_process

Throughout the course of this case there has been extreme bias towards the justice department in processing, scheduling and overall following due process of the law.

My brother has 3 small kids who NEED him. We have been patient, we have been more than fair with allowing the law to do their part, now it’s time for us to USE OUR VOICES! I cannot sit quietly while my brother wastes away in jail cell. Please sign this petition to share your support for human and civil rights for all. My goal is to receive 5,000 signatures by August 1st.
