SojoAction Alert - Urge Congress to end our gun violence public safety crisis

SojoAction Alert

The United States is facing a public safety crisis around gun violence. June is Gun Violence Awareness Month and we are grieving over the trauma of mass shootings at an elementary school shooting in Uvalde, TX, an Oklahoma hospital, a high school graduation in Louisiana, and the lynching in Buffalo. The America we believe in is a place where people can go to school, run daily errands, and celebrate life milestones without fear of death. Now is the time for action—without your voice, Congress won’t be compelled to act.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, our country ended 2021 with 693 mass shootings, up from 611 in 2020 and 417 in 2019. In 2022, our nation has already had more shootings than days of the year—231 shootings in only 152 days*. Every year over 30,000 Americans die in gun related incidents and firearms are a leading cause of death for children in the United States.

Through inaction, Congress is enabling the death of thousands of children by refusing to enact sensible gun laws supported by Americans. For example, a majority of citizens support commonsense solutions such as bans on assault weapons and universal background checks to keep guns out of the hands of those with violent histories, including those who have perpetrated domestic violence.

God does not want us to live this way. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. As the Bible instructs us, we must "love not in word or speech, but in truth and action" (1 John 3:18). Both the House and Senate are currently working on potential solutions that would make this country safer for your family and loved ones. Members need to hear your voice as they craft commonsense and popular gun safety protections. Join us by emailing your Members of Congress and urging them to end our gun violence public safety crisis.

Thank you for taking action!

In faith,

Lauren
