Presbyterians for Earth Care - Webinar this Thursday, Two November Webinars

October 13 Webinar:
Our Angry Eden

Faith & Hope on a Hotter, Harsher Planet
Rising winds, ravenous wildfires, droughts, hurricanes, floods: the world we will pass on is different than the one we inherited.  During this Zoom event, Rev. David Williams will be discussing his book OUR ANGRY EDEN, which spells out how we will be morally tested on this harsher, hotter planet we have made for ourselves. As temperatures move inexorably upward, living with our angry Eden will mean sustained difficulty and disruption. Williams beckons readers toward a faith and a purpose resilient enough to face the effects of the unfolding climate crisis. From altering our diets to welcoming refugees to reclaiming humble lifestyles, he offers eight specific moral frameworks that rise from the fierce demands of Jesus, which will help incarnate hope in the middle of catastrophic new realities. For a gospel people, the practices of wisdom and thrift, patience and generosity, welcome and mercy, grace and justice have always been essential and will be key to human thriving in the difficult age to come.

Please join us! Everyone is welcome to attend this webinar, whether or not they have read the book.

Introduction to Earth Care Congregations

Webinar Hosted by PEC

Is your church interested in becoming more involved as stewards of God’s earth? The Presbyterian Hunger Program’s Office of Sustainable Living & Earth Care Concerns provides an opportunity to certify your congregation as an Earth Care Congregation.

Earth Care Congregations are congregations that have committed to the “Earth Care Pledge” and accomplished a specific number of actions toward caring for God’s earth in four categories: worship, education, facilities, and outreach. Congregations earning 25 points in each of the four categories will be certified as Earth Care Congregations and receive various honors. Congregation members will also be invited to participate as individuals by completing similar actions in their homes.

In this webinar, Jessica Maudlin will introduce the Earth Care Congregation Certification, explain how churches are certified, and share examples of activities churches are already doing. Carol Dunn, an elder of an Earth Care Congregation, will share her experience of becoming certified. The webinar will highlight resources and ways the program is available to support interested churches. A time for discussion will follow the presentation.

Do It All for the Glory of God: Eating for a Healthy Climate

Webinar Hosted by PEC

Most are aware that combustion of fossil fuels is the dominant cause of climate change, but did you know there is another, largely hidden source responsible for as much as one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions?  Scientists have shown that even if fossil fuels were eliminated immediately, emissions from the global food system alone would make it impossible to prevent catastrophic climate change. This presentation will explain how food is contributing to the climate emergency, and offer science-based guidelines for making everyday dietary choices to reduce our climate “foodprint”. By being mindful of the environmental impact of our diets, our meals can become a joyful expression of our Christian values, honoring the right of children and all Creation to a safe climate and a livable future, all for the glory of God.

Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2022
