Presbyterians for Earth Care - Climate on the Ballot Webinar & Voting Resources PLUS 2 More Webinars Coming Up

Dear Friends of PEC,

The mid-terms are upon us, and Presbyterians for Earth Care encourages you to vote! And to vote for the healing and sustaining of God’s creation.
The sequoia and salmon, melting glacier and flooding coastline, bone dry valley and dwindling wild land, along with all those who suffer from creations crisis and human disregard all cry out for action.
Wolves and frogs cant vote, a lake or river cant call their elected representatives, and a polluted ravine cant blow the whistle on a toxic coal plant. But you can do all those things — and more.
The trouble is, not enough people who care about climate change, the extinction crisis or environmental justice make themselves known to the people who can make a systemic difference.[i]
We are called to join together and act effectively and with purpose.
To that end, PEC would like to offer the following resources to guide you in your decision making.  We encourage you to get acquainted with where your local candidates stand on the issues that relate to the environment. Here are a couple of points to help you focus your efforts: Don’t forget to sign up for PEC’s Climate on the Ballot: Faithful Voting Tuesdaywith a fine panel of presenters who will address voting and climate change.

Misdirection, obfuscation, and sharing misinformation are favorite tactics of those who seek stall forward movement.  Faith tells us that truth, compassion, and hope are the best tools for pursuing the shalom of God’s creation.  Blessings and strength to us all in the effort!

Introduction to Earth Care Congregations

Webinar Hosted by PEC

Is your church interested in becoming more involved as stewards of God’s earth? The Presbyterian Hunger Program’s Office of Sustainable Living & Earth Care Concerns provides an opportunity to certify your congregation as an Earth Care Congregation.

Earth Care Congregations are congregations that have committed to the “Earth Care Pledge” and accomplished a specific number of actions toward caring for God’s earth in four categories: worship, education, facilities, and outreach. Congregations earning 25 points in each of the four categories will be certified as Earth Care Congregations and receive various honors. Congregation members will also be invited to participate as individuals by completing similar actions in their homes.

In this webinar, Jessica Maudlin will introduce the Earth Care Congregation Certification, explain how churches are certified, and share examples of activities churches are already doing. Carol Dunn, an elder of an Earth Care Congregation, will share her experience of becoming certified. The webinar will highlight resources and ways the program is available to support interested churches. A time for discussion will follow the presentation.

Do It All for the Glory of God: Eating for a Healthy Climate

Webinar Hosted by PEC

Most are aware that combustion of fossil fuels is the dominant cause of climate change, but did you know there is another, largely hidden source responsible for as much as one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions?  Scientists have shown that even if fossil fuels were eliminated immediately, emissions from the global food system alone would make it impossible to prevent catastrophic climate change. This presentation will explain how food is contributing to the climate emergency, and offer science-based guidelines for making everyday dietary choices to reduce our climate “foodprint”. By being mindful of the environmental impact of our diets, our meals can become a joyful expression of our Christian values, honoring the right of children and all Creation to a safe climate and a livable future, all for the glory of God.

Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2022

Time: 7:00 pm Eastern (4:00 pm Pacific)

Presenter: Dr. Suzanne Jones, Montclair Presbyterian Church
