Muyembe, who serves as a commissioner on the WCC Commission for the Churches on International Affairs, is also an official with the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development.

“This award, which you accepted with exemplary humility, recognizes your commitment to protect and defend the sacredness of life and human dignity in harmony with Christian principles, especially in the context of your country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and of other African countries,” reads the letter. “For all these engagements and for your continuous work to encourage other initiatives for the defence of human dignity and human rights, which continue to be violated in so many ways, we give thanks to our Lord.”

The John Paul II International Prize is an annual award granted to people who stand out in their engagement in culture, politics, institutions, art, and the church, in accordance with the principles of the social doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church.
