TCR Breaking News: Greater Mt. Calvary AME Church, Beloit in Beloit, Alabama suffers massive damage during a tornado last weekend
Selma, AL – 15 January 2023 – Greater Mt. Calvary A.M.E. Church, a congregation and sanctuary at 107 County Road 189, Marion Junction, Alabama, suffered severe damage due to a tornado that impacted Selma and its surrounding areas on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

Greater Mt. Calvary's congregation has a very long history of serving the communities of Selma, Marion Junction, and Beloit in the Black Belt of Alabama since 1897. It has been rebuilt several times since 1897. Unfortunately, as of this writing, what remains of the structure may need to be demolished.

The Reverend Yvonne B. Howze, the pastor of Greater Mt. Calvary, stated that "While our sanctuary was beautiful, the church is not a building; the church is people who gather to worship and bring honor to God the Creator.”

The 9th Episcopal District will continue to pray and assist Greater Mt. Calvary AME Church, and its surrounding areas throughout the Selma, Beloit, and Autaugaville communities where seven people were killed, one was the cousin to an AME member. Many of our members also lost their homes, cars, and all possessions as a result of this horrific tornado.

Thank you for your prayers and your generosity as we pool our resources to assist our brothers and sisters in putting their lives back together. If you would like to assist with the Ninth Episcopal District Relief Fund, you may send your contributions to either of the following:
