Change.org Petition: This 9/11, honor these overlooked first responders - The Sept. 11 9/11 Museum Must Recognize New York City Transit Workers for their Service

Twenty-one years ago, the horrifying attack on the Twin Towers took place. In the aftermath of the attack, 3,000 NY transit workers participated in a rescue and recovery effort. They removed debris, cleaned facilities, and restored communications equipment. Despite their work, they are not acknowledged in the National September 11th Memorial and Museum. The TWU Local 100 started their petition because they know these workers deserve recognition. They’re calling on the Museum to honor the role these transit workers played in the days following 9/11.

Over 3,000 transit workers participated in the Rescue and Recovery Effort after the Attack on America on September 11, 2001; and

The National September 11th Memorial and Museum is the nation’s recognized repository for information and remembrance concerning the September 11th attack which brought down the World Trade Center towers; and

The National September 11th Memorial and Museum has never recognized that over 3,000 transit workers were assigned by New York City Transit/MTA to respond to the attack so that they could remove debris, clean and protect MTA facilities, enable access by other responders, illuminate the site, and restore communications equipment;

THEREFORE, we respectfully request that the National September 11th Memorial and Museum include a prominent exhibit at the museum, open to the public, acknowledging the important role New York City transit workers played in the rescue and recovery effort on 9/11/01 and in the days following at the World Trade Center site.
