In a lot of ways, 3-year-old Mia is just like other kids. She loves to play with dolls and make-up. But, Mia’s childhood has been deeply disrupted - battling leukemia since the age of one. Mia had just celebrated her first birthday when she was diagnosed with blood cancer. She’s 3 now, but can’t keep up with other kids because of the general weakness in her body due to her cancer.
The life of Mia and her family is constantly interrupted by frequent hospital visits, overwhelming medical bills, and a questionable future where the possibility of her death always lingers in their mind. Mia’s father has watched her suffer, and he knows there is more to be done to help children like her. Out of the billions of dollars of federal funding provided for cancer research, a mere 3.8% is reserved for the study and advancement of treatment for childhood cancers.

Mia’s story is no different from other children living with childhood cancer. Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death among children in the United States. In 2022, it is estimated that 15,600 children will be diagnosed with childhood cancer, and 1,780 will die of the disease. Chad, Mia’s father, started this petition because he is constantly forced to have hard conversations with oncologists. Delivering bad news to his daughter, family, and friends has become a daily part of his life. He wants the percentage of funding that goes to childhood cancer research to increase from 3.8% to 8%. So far, almost 100,000 people have joined Chad in calling on the government to increase funding for childhood cancer research. You can be part of the change in allowing kids to have a childhood - instead of a hospital stay.
