This month’s edition of the Racial Equity & Women’s Intercultural Ministries’ E-Newsletter focuses on the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s work toward racial equity and gender justice. The Rev. Shanea D. Leonard is the Associate for Gender & Racial Justice. The following are some of her reflections.

There is still work to be done

It was a bright Friday in June 2015 when the nation thought it had finally settled the major civil rights concerns of the LGBTQIA+ community. As rainbow flags waved and several city squares erupted in celebration of marriage equality passing in the Supreme Court, it was far from the end of a centuries-old journey to equality for the marginalized LGBTQIA+ community. In this country there are still 28 states that do not have anti-discrimination laws for LGBTQIA+ people, including the state of Kentucky where our denomination is headquartered.

The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival attracted more than 2.3 million people to watch its three-hour-plus Assembly and Moral March on Washington. Campaign positions mirror Presbyterian policy.

Matthew 25 Course for the PC(USA): Accessible theological education and training for the people of God
Stony Point Center and Johnson C. Smith Theological Seminary team up with the Presbyterian Mission Agency to launch online course supporting Matthew 25 Vision. Space is limited, so register now for the first course - "Awakening to Structural Racism" - which begins on Monday, August 10th. Learn more here about these classes and the Matthew 25 Vision.
