Action Alert - Protect the Integrity of the Fair Housing Act

Protect the Integrity of the Fair Housing Act!

On January 14, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) proposed a new rule that would amend HUD’s Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) regulations by drastically cutting requirements meant to enforce fair housing. This rule will undermine efforts to ensure that all people living in the United States can find affordable, livable housing without discrimination.

Tell HUD to protect AFFH regulations!

These amendments would weaken the enforcement of the Fair Housing Act of 1968, which was created to desegregate neighborhoods and protect all Americans’ right to fair housing. For the past fifty years, there has been limited progress on reversing racial housing segregation and homeownership disparities. Racial discrimination continues to be the second most reported type of housing discrimination. HUD’s proposed amendment withdraws tools to assess fair housing and weakens the enforceability of the Fair Housing Act. If this proposed rule passes, marginalized communities will be less protected from fair housing violations, leading to increased discrimination and higher risks of homelessness among communities of color.

The Presbyterian Church (USA) has been a long-time supporter of fair housing. In 1995, the 207th General Assembly passed a resolution supporting the Fair Housing Act and strongly opposed “efforts that would weaken the effectiveness of these legislative measures.” As Presbyterians, we are compelled to promote and pursue fair housing, and oppose legislation that will weaken the enforcement of fair housing.

Tell HUD to protect AFFH regulations!

The proposed rule is open for public comment until MARCH 16th. Prepare your comment and submit it at the federal register comments page.
