20th Episcopal District Disaster Relief Letter from the Council of Bishops

20th Episcopal District Disaster Relief Letter from the Council of Bishops

Tropical storm Freddy has recently heavily impacted the African nations of Mozambique and Malawi. Cyclone Freddy has caused 500 deaths and critically damaged infrastructures in northern Mozambique and central-south Malawi. Both countries are in mass mourning. The strong winds and heavy rainfall disrupted the lives of 500,000 people. In addition, this disaster resulted in critical water hygiene and sanitation, which increased related diseases such as cholera and typhoid.

In a matter of hours, Cyclone Freddy resulted in many communities being washed out by significant floods. Swollen rivers have washed away bridges, and roads, submerged crops, drowned livestock and destroyed the livelihoods of rural families. Many families were forced to find shelter in centers and schools if space was available.  All families are being drastically challenged to survive without food.

Several of our AME Churches have been severely damaged or flooded. Also, many of our AME members' homes need to be livable. There is a constant battle to get aid and food to the victims. Pastors and members are desperately trying to salvage what they can from the wreckage of their churches and homes to rebuild. However, their limited resources make their efforts unattainable.  Supplies are running short as these countries turn to recovery mode.

Therefore, we in the 20th Episcopal District humbly appeal to our AME Church family to HELP US with your financial support.

If you choose to do so, you may send your contributions to:
