Stop the "Don’t Say Gay" (HB1557) from Passing FL Senate | ||

We implore the Florida Senate to vote NO on the "Don’t Say Gay" bill (HB1557). The Florida House has passed a bill that will ban all discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation in schools. This bill would ban educators from discussing LGBTQ+ topics that are not “age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students.” According to the bill, parents may take legal action against their child’s school district and be awarded damages if they believe any of its policies infringe on their “fundamental right to make decisions regarding the upbringing and control of their children.” This would prevent educators that are members of the LGBTQ+ community from sharing their identity with students, and would completely prohibit the use of the word "gay". This bill will cause students who are struggling with sexual identity and gender to be oppressed and will, undoubtedly, negatively affect the mental wellbeing of students. Educators need to be a part of student development and prevent them from being sheltered to the diverse community in their communities. Oppressing these LGBTQ+ topics will hinder not only the students, but also teachers and members of the LGBTQ+ community. Students require a safe space for learning and this cannot be accomplished without open speech of all genders, and sexual orientations of people.
