#Petition: Help Save Grace the Ancient Turtle and her friends, by ending the filling of wetlands!

Grace, a 125-year-old snapping turtle in central Ontario, is at risk of losing her wetland hibernation habitat. Grace is well-known and beloved in the community and she returns to the same wetland every year to spend the winter. The wetland is scheduled to be filled in, which will put Grace and other animals using the wetland to pass the winter at serious risk. You can help protect Grace and her wetland habitat by signing the petition now.

A current Landowner on Gelert Road in Haliburton across from highland street, where Haliburton’s schools are located, is filling in a wetland that is a part of Grace’s territory. Grace is a well know one eyed snapping turtle that is over 100 years old, and likely hibernates in either the area being filled in, or across the road. Filling in this area will kill any turtles or other wildlife that are using this area to overwinter. Not only will filling in this part of the wetland cause environmental damage and possibly kill turtles, it will likely contribute to flooding issues over the adjacent section of road, as the water catchment will be displaced giving nowhere for runoff form rainfall to go. This wetland is zoned as Environmentally Protected but the controls in place to protect it seem limited. This is being posted as a part of the efforts of Turtle Guardians and the Land Between Charity. Help Us save this wetland and the amazing turtles that many in Haliburton know and love.
