#Petition: Another George Floyd? - JUSTICE FOR PATRICK LYOYA

Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by a police officer during a routine traffic stop last week. Body cam and video footage from a witness shows that Patrick, who is a Congolese refugee, was unarmed. The Grand Rapids Police Chief indicated that the white officer is on paid leave with no criminal charges and will remain unnamed. Petition starter Nayanazgeni is now urging prosecutor Chris Becker to recuse himself from the investigation because Becker has a track record of mishandling such cases - posing a conflict of interest. We, the undersigned, demand Prosecutor Chris Becker recuse himself from the investigation of the murder of Patrick Lyoya.  Mr. Becker’s intentional mishandling of the due process owed Patrick Lyoya and his family is irreparable. Mr. Becker has created an ever-growing legal crisis rapidly moving toward what will amount to be a protracted cover-up that he will not be able to contain.

“Sure. I don’t have control. I don’t have control over police agencies, they’re separate entities,” Becker said.

Why would he recommend an unedited clear, accurate record of the event that ended a human being’s life not be shown? Because he has seen it.

Mr. Beckers’s reluctance to release the video flies in the face of his oath of office and the constitution he swore to defend.  This is a clear and prescient conflict of interest as it displays a predetermination disallowing him to view the aspects of the case in an objective manner.

We demand Mr. Becker recuse himself from the case of the Murder of Patrick Lyoya

What’s the point of having accountability checks in place if they can be disregarded when they "feel like it"
