This November, governments around the world are expected to make a once-every-five-year increase in their commitment under the Paris Climate Agreement. We are at a critically important moment; a chance for a huge step forward. But here’s the thing: the commitments we’re seeing aren’t close to what’s needed. Without a sizable upsurge in grassroots moral pressure, we don’t have a prayer for a secure future.
Here in the US, we need to make sure that President Biden sets the example leading up to the International Climate negotiations by rejecting the Line 3 and Dakota Access pipelines that are being resisted by Indigenous communities, and investing in a sustainable recovery from COVID. We invite you to join the thousands of people of faith who’ve signed the petition calling on Biden to stop the Line 3 pipeline and all other fossil fuel projects.
Together, we are demanding that our leaders actually lead. That they show moral courage. That they do what is right, not what the fossil fuel and industrial agriculture industries responsible for the climate emergency want them to do. In President Biden’s inauguration speech, he said “a cry for survival comes from the planet itself.” We hear that cry and we call on him to do what needs to be done.
That’s why in addition to signing petitions, we’re taking action on the 11th of March.
11 March, at 11:00 am, symbolizes the reality that we’re at the 11th hour. There’s no time left to delay or to make excuses. If you are not working on a local campaign, we invite you to hold an action calling on Biden to reject the Line 3 pipeline and build back fossil free. You can hold signs on a busy corner, or make noise in front of your place of worship. If there’s a federal building or State Department office in your town, you could hold your event there.
We are people of diverse religions. We know what it means to face the truth. The truth is that we need to do our part and we need our leaders to lead. Right now.
You can influence the outcome of the climate negotiations, and the US’s ability to lead, but only if you get involved. Sign the Line 3 petition, or host a Line 3 event, and we’ll follow up and share ways you can get to work with a beautiful, diverse, multi-faith community.
In solidarity,
Rev. Fletcher and the GreenFaith Team
