TCR Breaking News: Message from Bishop Vashti McKenzie on the situation in Texas

TCR Breaking News: Update on the Texas and the10th Episcopal District TEXAS WINTER STORMS AND POWER OUTAGES Start Strong, Stay Strong and Stand Strong! It has been a challenging start to 2021. There is the continuing global health, racial and economic pandemics. If that is not enough, Texas has experienced two back-to-back severe winter storms.  Many of our clergy and members have and are still suffering from the loss of electricity, internet, cellular service, and water. Four million people were without power and held on to hope as temperatures plummeted to single digits.   Pipes froze. Residents in areas such as Ft Worth, Houston, Austin, and Arlington must boil water for drinking, bathing, washing clothes, and cooking. Broken pipes have spewed water in homes, apartments, schools, businesses, and church buildings. This forced people to seek shelter elsewhere and some into their cars to stay warm. State-wide, it is estimated that more than 13 million people are living in areas with compromised water supply.  Several of our churches were impacted by these winter storms due to broken pipes Water covered floors in hallways, offices, gym, outreach areas, and sanctuaries. In the aftermath, energy bills are expected to extremely high and will hurt those less likely to be able to pay.  This is what we need: Monetary donations to help members and churches recover; gift cards to assist impacted families, bottled water, and bulk food items. The following options are available: 1) Send monetary and gift card donations to the 10th Episcopal District 4347 S. Hampton Rd. Suite 245 Dallas, Texas 75232-1064 with the memo "Winter Storm Relief" 2) Donations can also be received on the Givelify App, Tenth District AME Church  3) CashApp at $tenthdistrictame tag it "Winter Storm Relief".  Donations of bottled water and bulk food items will be directed to our churches that serve as Distribution Centers in various cities. Bulk food items will be sent to our Distribution Centers. Please notify the 10th District office in advance of water donations so that churches are prepared to receive the gift.  Texas will continue to Stand Strong as our 10th Episcopal District theme says that we Start Strong, Stay Strong and Stand Strong! (Ephesians 6:10), the Lord being our helper! In this Lenten season, we are on the road toward resurrection.
