In January, President Biden pledged to “electrify” the U.S. government vehicle fleet by replacing its 650,000 gas-powered vehicles with electric models. His pledge is big news and directs the power of the American government toward a healthier future. But that is easier said and done. Last month, the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) flouted Biden’s promise to the American people, announcing they would replace their 30-year-old fleet of delivery trucks with gas-powered ones instead. If the new fleet lasts another thirty years, they could be some of the last gas vehicles on the road. Their decision makes absolutely no sense. Sign our petition and demand the USPS go electric. At a time when communities across the country who already suffer worse health outcomes from air pollution are also experiencing higher rates of COVID-19, it’s especially outrageous for the USPS to lock us into polluting vehicles. Lawmakers have now introduced legislation to call on the Postal Service to halt their plans to purchase nearly $500 million of new non-environmentally friendly delivery trucks as it doesn’t appear to be inline with Biden’s executive order to electrify the federal fleet. Congressman Jared Huffman (D-CA) also introduced a bill that would provide $6 billion to help the USPS purchase new electric vehicles. The USPS has no excuse to increase pollution. Sign the petition and demand the USPS follow Biden’s executive order and electrify their fleet. Diesel and gas-powered vehicles harm our environment, our health, and our quality of life. Not only do the carbon emissions contribute to the warming of our planet, but the small particles they release into the air can cause asthma, cardiovascular disease, childhood leukemia, and premature death! When there is a healthier, cleaner alternative, why is the USPS set on replacing their old vehicles with new ones that continue to harm the environment and our health? Sign our petition and tell the USPS it’s time for an upgrade. Tell them to replace their fleet with electric vehicles. | |||||||||||||||
