“We stand in solemn solidarity with those who mourn the loss of loved ones and offer our heartfelt prayers for the healing and recovery of the injured,” he said. “We view this moment as a pivotal opportunity for transformative action.” Pillay urged leaders and decision-makers in Lebanon to seize this chance to rebuild the country on a solid foundation. “This includes reinforcing the sovereignty of the nation, ensuring safety and security of the nation from external threats, and addressing the urgent need for long-term stability, resilience, economic equity, and sustainable development,” he said. “Beyond the physical reconstruction, we fervently pray for the restoration of social cohesion among communities in Lebanon.” Pillay added that unity and mutual trust are indispensable for sustainable peace, and he called on all parties to nurture a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration. “We also pray for the safe return of all displaced people in Lebanon and Israel,” Pillay said. “May they find a life under conditions of peace, dignity, and security.” Pillay noted grave concern for the ongoing violence and suffering in Gaza and the West Bank. “We renew our urgent call for a comprehensive and lasting peace in the region, one that is rooted in justice, the restoration of rights, and the dignity of all people,” he said. “The World Council of Churches continues to advocate for a peace that is both just and enduring, grounded in compassion, equity, and our shared humanity.” He concluded: “May this ceasefire serve as a beacon of hope and a step toward a future where peace, justice, and reconciliation prevail for all people in the region.” Read full statement: World Council of Churches comment on the Ceasefire Between Lebanon and Israel |
