The Christian Recorder - Statement from the Council of Bishops on the November 2024 US General Election

Yesterday, the United States voted to return Donald Trump to the White House as the 47th President of the United States. The result of this election is causing alarm across the world.

What do we do? Despite our fear and trauma at the thought of another Trump presidency, the Council of Bishops of the African Methodist Episcopal Church calls upon our members to remain faithful and never cease praying. God does still has the last word. Democracy is at risk, yet God has never turned His back on us!

Today, several of our questions are seemingly unanswered. Yet, hope abounds! We are thankful for all the efforts of activism and engagement during this election season that the clergy and laity of the African Methodist Episcopal Church engaged in. We are proud of the election of several of our members to offices at the local, state and federal level. These efforts will not be in vain because we know the battle is not to the strong or the swift but to the faithful.

Before moving forward, let us stop, lament and seek God's direction in prayer. Then, we must exhale, plan, and organize to continue our fight for justice and God's kingdom here. God's plan is yet to be revealed. Like Paul and Silus, we must remain faithful, vigilant, hopeful, and ready to act.

Bishop Silvester Scott Beaman, President, Council of Bishops
Bishop Wilfred Messiah, Senior Bishop
Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, Chair Social Action Commission
Bishop Marvin C. Zanders II, Secretary, Council of Bishops
Sis. Jackie DuPont Walker, Director Social Action Commission
