Call your Senators TODAY and urge them to address the needs of millions of families!

On May 15th, the House of Representatives passed the Health and Economic Recovery Omnibus Emergency Solutions Act (HEROES Act). The HEROES Act provides support for essential workers, protects voting rights and the census, and provides aid to low-income communities. This legislation was passed by the House nearly four months ago. In mid-August, Mitch McConnell put forward the Delivering Immediate Relief to America’s Families, Schools and Small Businesses Act. This bill that would provide no additional stimulus checks to people and families, offered a 50 percent cut to the now expired $600 weekly boost in enhanced unemployed benefits, allocated $0 for food assistance or rental assistance, minimal aid to schools, and no assistance for state and local governments. This bill did not pass. The Senate has yet to propose any other meaningful COVID-19 relief legislation.

We must urge the Senate to understand the dire needs of millions of people throughout our country.

Since the Coronavirus Pandemic began…

  • 45% of adults lived in households in which someone lost income from work since March 13.
  • 9.2% was the unemployment rate for the week ending Sept. 5. That’s up from the August rate of 8.4%.
  • 668,000 is the total number of educator jobs lost since the pandemic began, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The National Education Association estimates that nearly two million K-12 jobs will be lost over the next three years if Congress does not act.
  • At least half of households in America’s four largest cities – New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Houston – report facing serious financial problems, with issues ranging from depleting their savings to serious problems paying rent, according to a new poll. It’s worse for Latinx and Black households.

These issues are only getting worse. Millions of Americans are in need of relief. Join our national allies for a national day of action to demand the Senate act. The Senate must move quickly to pass legislation that will address increasingly urgent needs of people and families who are struggling as a result of the pandemic.
