WCC NEWS: “Conflict Zones and Covid-19” webinar will offer a clarion call to compassion

A webinar hosted by the World Council of Churches (WCC) on 26 November will explore “Conflict Zones and Covid-19: A call to compassion.” Speakers from Cameroon, Nigeria, South Sudan, Lebanon, Belarus and Colombia will offer their insights on how conflict exacerbates the conditions for contracting and treating COVID-19 among civilians caught in the crossfire, especially women.

Gender-based violence has been on the rise in many countries across the world. While some of the challenges people in conflict zones face are immediately visible, others are invisible—and often made worse by the silence within communities. And, for many people with disabilities, oppression in the context of COVID-19 has become greater than ever.

Together, speakers and participants will try to answer key questions: what is our call for compassion? How can we make the impact of these conflicts visible? How can we be voices and agents of hope?

WCC member churches and ecumenical partners may be especially interested in finding out practical ways to advocate for change. The webinar is being held during the “16 Days Against Gender-Based Violence” international campaign, which begins on 25 November and ends on 10 December, Human Rights Day. The WCC, through the Thursdays in Black campaign and other efforts, will be praying and reflecting in some special way on each of the 16 days.
