WCC NEWS: WCC reiterates solidarity with Sudan, lifts up vulnerable people

In a statement about Sudan, the World Council of Churches (WCC) executive committee lifted up especially vulnerable women, children, and marginalized minority groups in the midst of the war.

The WCC governing body denounced the conflict parties’ repeated disregard for the principles of international humanitarian, human rights, and criminal law and of common morality as evidenced by the nature of atrocities committed.

The statement called for “full legal accountability for all crimes committed” and highlighted the “psychological toll on people, especially children, resulting from this ongoing conflict and its impacts.”

The WCC executive committee also denounced “the role of some outside actors in exacerbating the violence, sustaining the conflict, and increasing the suffering of Sudan’s people,” and urged the international community to respond generously to the humanitarian needs.

The WCC executive committee is meeting in Bogota from 6-11 June, where the governing body is focusing on the business of the WCC and on absorbing the life and witness of churches at the heart of the Pilgrimage of Justice, Reconciliation, and Unity.
