GreenFaith - Tanzania Ten: Not Yet

GreenFaith Logo

After a press briefing, GreenFaith Tanzania members were
imprisoned with no charge.

I hope you are well. I am writing to update you on the Tanzania Ten, and ask for your help.

First, the good news: thanks to your support and great work by our teams in East Africa and France, the Tanzanian government stopped harassing our GreenFaith community members for a few weeks.

Last week, the Tanzania team had a press briefing where they shared the stories of people being impacted by the EACOP. Days later, four of them were arrested without charges. They have since been released, and again, are being required to report to the police station.

Send a solidarity gift right now to support the team and courageous GreenFaith volunteers.

This is a frightening, difficult time for these volunteers and their families. While the struggle is not over, international pressure from supporters like you has made a difference. Thank you!

Your support has been crucial during this time. Because of you:

  • Greenfaith was able to pay for indispensable legal counsel for the Tanzania Ten. It also covered transport, food, and lodging costs for them during their multiple five-hour trips back and forth to the police station where they were interrogated.

  • More than 2,400 people of faith signed an open letter that our French team delivered to the headquarters of TotalEnergies, the French multinational that is EACOP’s main supporter. Here’s an Instagram Reel of the delivery.

  • 379 people of diverse faiths undertook a day-long fast in support of the Tanzania Ten and calling for a stop to EACOP–signifying the 379 million tons of CO2 that EACOP would create.

This global solidarity—across faiths and geographies—is what GreenFaith is all about. Thank you for your commitment! And, thank you to the courageous Tanzania Ten, who, despite ongoing and escalating threats, are unwavering in their commitment to climate justice.

In faith,
Rev. Fletcher Harper
