Environmental Mission Trips

A few years ago I traveled with my daughter in a cramped van to spend a week at the Cheyenne River Youth Project in Eagle Butte, South Dakota. The trip was exhausting and exhilarating as we worked alongside Lakota youth to plant a large vegetable garden. We were buoyed by laughter, conversation, and the delicious food served in their cafe, with vegetables coming straight from the garden where we labored under the hot sun.

A few days after we left, we received word that an enormous storm had blown through the reservation, ripping the garden to shreds and destroying most of our hard work. For us, it was disappointing, but for the Youth Project, it was a major setback. The garden wasn’t just an activity to keep youth busy. It was a source of income that couldn’t easily be replaced.

As Christians, we live in the hope promised by Christ’s resurrection. But with hope comes the unexpected. We must be prepared for the unknown and the unknowable as we put ourselves out in the world to do Christ’s work.

This edition of Earth News is about going out in the world, not just talking and thinking about mission, but stepping up to do what is necessary to save our planet. Take some time to journey with us, and be inspired to walk your own path as you labor for Mother Earth.

Earth Care

Earth care is our passion and we think it should be yours

If you don’t start to care, you better beware

Climate refugees may end up at your door

We’re called to be stewards of this beautiful earth

The only planet God provided us at our birth

Reduce, revise, recycle, renew

Refresh, reconsider, and remember too

A wise native elder once said

We didn’t inherit the earth from our ancestors

We are borrowing it from our children

So let us by our children be led

Climate change we can no longer deny

The earth has been wounded

Can you hear her cry?

Caring for earth is our duty, but it’s also a joy.

What actions will you now employ?

So care for the earth

We invite you to get on board

Let our love for this earth give praise

To the Lord.
