World Council of Churches general secretary Rev. Prof. Dr Jerry Pillay expressed deep alarm and grief over the deadly attack on Gaza carried out by Israeli forces on 17-18 March, killing more than 330 people.

“We unequivocally condemn this unnecessary re-escalation of violence, which has led to more deaths and further suffering for innocent civilians, including women and children,” said Pillay. “As a fellowship of churches committed to justice and peace, we call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and a renewed commitment to dialogue and diplomatic solutions.”

He urged that the cycle of violence must end, and all parties must adhere to international humanitarian law, ensuring the protection of all people, especially the most vulnerable.

“We also strongly condemn the recent US airstrikes on Yemen, which have further destabilized the region and inflicted additional suffering on an already vulnerable population,” Pillay said. “Military action cannot be a path to peace; rather, it exacerbates humanitarian crises and deepens cycles of conflict.”

The people of Yemen, like those in Gaza, deserve security, dignity, and the opportunity to live free from fear and violence, Pillay urged.

“We stand in solidarity with all those affected by these tragedies and urge the international community to intensify efforts toward a just and lasting peace in these contexts and around the world,” he said. “In this Lenten season, we pray for the healing of the wounded, for the consolation of the bereaved, and for a future in which justice and peace prevail.”
