Special Action Alert from Presbyterians for Earth Care
Dear friends of Godâs creation:
As people of faith, we are called to care for God's amazing creation. Genesis 2:15 tells us to âtill and keepâ or even to âserve and protectâ what God entrusted to humankind.âCaring for Godâs creationâ is even listed as one of the expectations of PCUSA members in our churchâs Book of Order (G-1.0304)!
As Congress considers cuts to the national budget as part of their current consultation process, it is imperative that people of faith let them know that we feel the current system of tax credits, adopted in 2022 as a part of the Inflation Reduction Act are crucial to faithful earth stewardship in the face of the climate crisis and its devastating impacts on the most vulnerable and the earth entrusted to our care.
The House Way and Means Committee is starting to talk about the clean energy tax credits adopted by congress in 2022 as part of the Inflation Reduction Act, so it is important that we make every effort to contact our representatives and senators as soon as possible. The next two weeks are especially important.
Climate: The Clean energy tax credits that Congress passed in 2022 as part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which have garnered significant bi-partisan support, have been a transformative tool in supporting the transition to clean energy, putting the U.S. on track to reduce our carbon pollution 40% by 2030.
People: The IRA also lowers energy costs, making it more affordable for Americans to electrify their homes and transportation. One estimate finds that repealing the clean energy tax credits would lead to a 10% increase in electricity rates.
Businesses: Since the lawâs passage, Americaâs businesses have jumped at the new opportunity to build clean energy. Billions of dollars in investments for things like solar manufacturing and battery storage plants have poured into districts across the country. Check out this database of projects at cclusa.org/defend-IRA-data.
Despite all of these benefits, the clean energy tax credits could be on the chopping block as Republicans work toward a budget reconciliation bill. Letâs make sure lawmakers know that Clean energy tax credits are driving jobs, investment, and pollution cuts across the country. Some Republicans have signed letters to Speaker Mike Johnson in support of the clean energy tax credits. If your legislator is on the list, thank them!
