My name is Susu and my 2.5 year old daughter, Nahlah, passed away on March 19, 2023 from accidentally ingesting a button battery. This is her story. This is why we want to ban button batteries in children’s toys. This is why we want to protect other children.

On March 19th we woke up for the day. I made something to eat and we watched movies. I had planned to go to the store later that afternoon so I was about to lay Nahlah down for a nap and had just taken her to use the bathroom before laying her down. I walked out to grab her tablet and blanket and came back in to her laying on the bathroom floor pouting, which she usually does before a nap when she doesn’t want to lay down. A few seconds later blood started coming out of her mouth.

We called 911 to get help. They tried everything they could, but sadly could not save her. She fought so hard, but they could not stabilize her. She had bled out internally. They tried everything they could including medication, some of which they said was the highest dose they had ever given. After her passing they did an autopsy and discovered she had swallowed a button battery.

I later discovered came from one of her toys. I am not even sure when she could have swallowed it as she never put anything in her mouth other than food or maybe a stuffed animal. My baby passed from a battery that was in a toy that should have been safe for her!

Even though this is some freak accident and out of character for her to put anything in her mouth, this is more common than I would have ever expected. I encourage you to check your child’s toys. I’ve had so many mothers reach out to me already that have thrown out toys due to finding out they contained a button battery and it didn’t feel secure or safe for their children.

Nahlah had no symptoms that she had swallowed anything until it was too late, it all happens so fast. Please be sure to lock up any batteries that may be needed for household items, be sure if a child’s toy requires a battery that a screw is in the back to hold it shut and if not, please throw it out or give the child the toy without a battery in it.

After things settled down and we received the autopsy report back saying that it was a button battery but they did not find it inside of her, they encouraged me to go back through her diapers from the day. I did find it in a dirty diaper from prior to her passing, but once it has traveled through the digestive tract, the damage is done. There have been cases of other children who got the battery out/discovered and sadly still pass because of the damage. It only took one tiny battery going through Nahlah’s system to burn through her main artery making her heart bleed out and spit up blood… by then it was too late to save her. We’ve been told it can take as little as 2 hours to be fatal!!!

I encourage you… if you have not to check your child’s toys, secure any batteries you can and take the time to sign our petition to ban button batteries from children’s toys to keep all of our children safe. It is hard to believe a company would still use these batteries knowing the damage they can cause.
