TW: Sexual Abuse, Violence

My name is Ani Chaglasian, and my childhood was stolen from me when explicit videos of me were distributed on the Internet. The trauma of having my abuse forever immortalized online is something that I will never be able to escape.

But my story is not unique. In 2022 alone, 322 million files of child sexual abuse material were found on the Internet. That number is equivalent to the entire population of the United States, but it’s believed to represent only 3% of all child sexual abuse material available online. As more and more children start using online platforms at younger ages, this number will only continue to rise.

That’s why Saanvi Arora and I are working on a bill that would enable victims of child sexual abuse to seek justice against third-party platforms that facilitate their abuse. This bill would reinterpret Section 230 of the Federal Communications Act, which currently grants Internet-based service providers immunity in cases of child sexual abuse. It would also redefine "child pornography" in federal law to "child sexual abuse material," making it clear that this material documents a crime scene. Additionally, this bill would create a commission to research ways for lawmakers and Internet-based service providers to revise standards for managing content pertaining to children shared on online platforms.

Every explicit photo of a child is a photo of a tortured child. While predators continue to adapt to the Internet, our safety measures lag behind. I implore you to sign this petition and demand that your legislators take the necessary steps to end the injustice that survivors everywhere face. Together, we can make a difference.
