Change.org - Target

According to the organization Another Green Idea, Target doesn’t recycle cardboard. Although most cardboard can be recycled, they have confirmed this retail giant just sends it to the landfill. They started a petition demanding to know: why all the waste? They want to see Target recycle cardboard, and use recycled paper products in manufacturing. Sign the petition now to ask for a greener Target.

It has come to my attention and confirmed by Target Corporation that they do not currently recycle cardboard.

The production of 1 ton of virgin cardboard (material that doesn’t contain recycled cardboard) requires 3 tons of wood. Most cardboard can be recycled, such as boxes, plates, tubes, fiberboard, and paperboard and is one of the most widely recycled materials in the world.

Recycling firms and paper mills can recycle a single cardboard fiber roughly seven times. This can greatly reduce the carbon impact of producing and manufacturing cardboard as well as reduce the number of trees cut down. As opposed to creating one ton of the material from scratch, reprocessing saves up to 390 kWh of energy, requires only 75% of the total energy needed to create from scratch, and saves up to 1.1 barrels (46 gallons) of oil.

So why is Target not recycling cardboard?? I can’t come up with a good answer, particularly for a company with vast resources and financial opportunity. It’s astounding to think of the amount of cardboard packaging utilized by Target corporation that ends up in the landfill. There, it will take decades to break down. Instead, Target could help reduce 1 ton of C02 emissions as well as 3 cubic yards of landfill space for each ton of recycled cardboard.

Please join me in signing this petition to encourage Target Corporation to correct this environmental assault. Let’s encourage them to not only start recycling cardboard, but to choose to use recycled paper products throughout their product lines. This will save energy, reduce landfill use, saves trees, creates greater demand for recycled goods, and produces less carbon.
