As many of us have had the opportunity to reflect and spend time with our loved ones in this holiday season of Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and the New Year, we now turn with renewed clarity as we turn over the calendar year and look towards the future. Being deliberate in carrying the spirit of charity and care that we cherished throughout the season of Advent, as we turn towards this most consequential new year for ourselves and the country. We understand the consequences well when we look at our headlines and see the escalation of conflict from the United States under the Trump Administration in Nigeria and Venezuela. In both cases, we’re seeing the rise of militarism and a total abandonment of democratic control, where violence is being committed in our name. At the same time, we continue to see the devastating consequences of the disruption of foreign aid as people in countries like Yemen, Thailand, and South Sudan all being affected. Now, more than ever, we must raise our voices as Christians to demand peace here and abroad. As we have seen far too frequently, our communities being targeted by the Trump administration as well. We must demand charity and care throughout our national policy as we reflect it in our lives as we head into the next year. - Rev. Moya Harris and Chad Stanton, Sojourners |
