Earlier this month, the US Senate Budget Committee held a hearing to continue a congressional investigation into Big Oil's decades of deception and obstruction on climate. Ahead of the hearing, the committee released a new report and thousands of internal documents from fossil fuel companies and trade associations, shedding further light on their ongoing disinformation and greenwashing tactics. The mountain of evidence is growing ever larger. The fossil fuel industry knew over 60 years ago how dangerous its products are to a stable climate and the wellbeing of people around the world, and decided to lie, deceive, and delay instead of taking action. Tell the Department of Justice (DOJ) that it is time to launch an investigation into the fossil fuel industry's coordinated effort to mislead the public and policymakers on climate. At the committee hearing, former DOJ attorney Sharon Eubanks—who served as lead counsel in a landmark racketeering case against Big Tobacco—stated that she believes there is a solid evidentiary basis for the DOJ to investigate the fossil fuel industry's actions. She noted that a federal lawsuit could be a powerful tool to get fossil fuel corporations to change their harmful business practices. We cannot allow Big Oil to continue business as usual, wielding outsize political influence and spreading disinformation in order to delay action on climate change even as the impacts become more severe year after year. Tell Attorney General Merrick Garland and the DOJ that it is time to act to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable.
