Dear Friend of Creation,
At the 2024 General Assembly held in Salt Lake City, a policy was adopted, based on previous policies, to protect the largest network of intact ecosystems in the lower 48 states in Utah which include the now restored Grand Staircase-Escalante and Bears Ears National Monument. The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is now under threat by the weaponization of the obscure law known as the Congressional Review Act. A vote could happen as soon as the week of March 23rd. Let your members of Congress know that you don't want this bad precedent set that is likely to but used on other National Monuments using this link: https://suwa.quorum.us/campaign/153366/
The overture from the Presbytery of Utah asks the PCUSA and its churches to join with denominations and faith leaders in the U.S. and Utah who are urging the ongoing protection of Utah Wilderness, especially the restored Bears Ears National Monument and Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument by signing the Interfaith Joint Statement on the Care of Creation & the Perpetual Preservation of Utah Wilderness. The General Assembly to passed this overture as an important sign for a) protecting God’s creation, b) offering allyship and support with the people who call this area their sacred place, and c) showing solidarity with the ongoing issues of ecological and cultural justice the Presbytery of Utah faces, both during the 226th General Assembly and beyond.
