Recently, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration delivered the sobering news that 2023 was the warmest year on record. It was a signal that the world needs to be prepared for the consequences of climate change and take steps to mitigate them when possible. In keeping with the Matthew 25 invitation, which includes climate change as one its intersectional priorities, Compassion, Peace and Justice has been raising awareness about issues related to climate change in multiple ways, from a recent Faith, Democracy and Justice webinar, to the promotion of “Plastic Jesus: Real Faith in a Synthetic World,” an Earth Day resource by Creation Justice Ministries, which is a partner of the Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP). Jessica Maudlin of PHP was instrumental in developing the resource and has penned an Earth Day Minute for Mission about the work of a partner called Alaska Community Action on Toxics. From affordable housing to community gardens to equitable educational and employment opportunities to healing from addiction and mental illness to enacting policy change – there is not just one way to be a part of the Matthew 25 movement. |
