Update on the Landfill Search with Harris Family

A Conversation with the Family of Morgan Harris

Indigenous Ministries and Justice of the United Church of Canada is honoured to be hosting Cambria Harris, daughter of Morgan Harris, and family member Melissa Robinson on April 21 at 6:00 p.m. ET. Please join us in listening to the challenges that the families face in seeking justice for their loved ones and the ongoing battle to have the Prairie Green landfill searched.

The 90-minute program on April 21 will feature conversation with Cambria and Melissa, and be followed by some time for questions from the audience.

We hope that this webinar will help us all become stronger advocates and better allies in keeping all Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people that much safer.

Moose Hide Campaign Day May 16

Moose Hide Campaign, May 16, 2024

Started along Canada’s infamous Highway of Tears, the Moose Hide Campaign is an Indigenous-led grassroots movement of men, boys, and all Canadians who are standing up against violence towards women, girls, and Two-Spirit people.

Indigenous Ministries and Justice urges individuals and communities  of faith to participate in Moose Hide Campaign Day, and to raise awareness of the campaign through the year. Check out our Moose Hide Campaign webpage to learn more, order Moose Hide pins, look for or register local events, and for a prayer to use as you put on your pin this year. Stay tuned for further United Church updates!

By wearing a moose hide pin and participating in Moose Hide Campaign Day, millions of Canadians are making meaningful progress towards reconciliation and the creation of a country where violence against women and children is no longer allowed to flourish in the shadows.

Moderator and Indigenous Hands

Remit 1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization has passed. The church’s National Indigenous Council (NIC), its 16 regional councils, and 80% of pastoral charges in The United Church of Canada participated in the vote on Remit 1: Establishing an Autonomous National Indigenous Organization.

Here are the results of this remit vote, by the numbers:
  • The National Indigenous Council, and the 16 voting regional councils:  Yes: 17  No: 0
  • Pastoral charges:  Yes: 1482  No: 93

In response, the National Indigenous Council shared their vision statement with the whole church. They also offered words of thanks for all who helped bring the church to this moment, and stated their commitment to moving forward together on the path of Right Relations.

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues meets April 2024

The 23rd session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues will take place April 15-26, 2024, at United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York. The Forum has a mandate to focus on economic and social development, culture, education, environment, health and human rights. It provides advice on these topics from an Indigenous perspective and makes recommendations to UN member states and to all UN agencies. UN agencies in turn attend the Forum to speak about how they have responded to the Forum’s previous reports.

The Forum attracts a wide range of participants from Indigenous organizations around the world, member states, and non-governmental organizations. The World Council of Churches participates in the Forum, as do some national church bodies. This Forum’s theme this year is “Enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination in the context of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: emphasizing the voices of Indigenous youth.” While registration for this year’s Forum has closed, plenary sessions are livestreamed.

Information about how to access the livestreams, when available, and other information about Forum proceedings may be located through the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

Justice and Reconciliation Fund Committee Seeking New Member

Justice & Reconciliation event at Sherbrooke Lake Camp

We are seeking an Indigenous person to serve on the Justice and Reconciliation Fund committee. As the committee’s name suggests, its role is to review and make decisions on submissions for project grants from the United Church of Canada’s Justice and Reconciliation Fund. The committee is made up of five people and includes both Indigenous and non-Indigenous church members. Meetings are held twice a year on line by videoconference to allocate the $100,000 annually available from the fund. At this time, to broaden the geographic representation of the committee, preference is for an Indigenous person residing outside of British Columbia and Ontario. If you are interested in serving on the committee, or know of someone you would like to nominate or encourage to apply, information about how to express interest is available on The United Church of Canada website.
