The United Nations was founded out of the urgency and need for global peace, and we see that the same urgency for global peace rings true today. The UN is the world’s only truly universal global organization and it’s the one place where nations can come together to discuss shared problems and find solutions that bring peace and justice that creates a better world and future for all people. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has been active in the UN since its formation in 1945, and through our special consultative status through the UN Economic and Social Council, we have the platform for the Presbyterian voice to be heard by the global audience and to contribute to its agenda.
The Presbyterian Ministry at the United Nations (PMUN) advocates for the promotion and protection of peace, advancing human rights, just climate policy, gender justice, racial justice, the rights of migrants and uplifting the voices of young people in our denomination and beyond. Our office, in collaboration with the broader PC(USA), sends a delegation each year to COP, the UN's climate change conference, and the Commission on the Status of Women, the UN's primary gender justice body.
In the past few years, we have dealt with many daunting challenges, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the effects of climate change and conflicts around the world, and it is our goal to seek justice and peace, not only for people but also for God’s creation, and the UN gives us a place to do so. The UN plays a critical role in our world today and will continue to do so in the future as it sets new goals to create a more just and peaceful world. The UN’s story is still being written, and it’s an honor that Presbyterians are a part of it as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ in the global community. We would love for you to join us on our journey and stay connected to the advocacy and social justice work we do throughout the year. Please follow us on social media and read the stories in this month’s newsletter. |
