Change.org Petition: Stop Baby Goslings from being KILLED by Cassata Org on Long Island!

A resident of a luxury apartment complex on Long Island recorded two employees from the apartment’s property management company grabbing 7 baby geese by their wings and throwing them in their truck. When confronted, they laughed and drove away. The complex owner uses this cruel practice at 6 other buildings in New York, and refuses to respond to requests for nonlethal wildlife management. Petition starter John is the executive director of Humane Long Island, and started his petition to stop this inhumane practice and protect innocent baby goslings. You can help by signing the petition now. Urgent: Stop Baby Goslings from being KILLED by Cassata Org on Long Island! 3,556 have signed John Di Leonardo’s petition. Let’s get to 5,000!

On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, a resident of luxury apartment complex Victorian Gardens in Holtsville NY videotaped two men coralling mother geese and their babies before grabbing the babies by their wings and hauling them away. Authorities tell us they were likely killed. When the resident questioned the abductors about a permit and informed them she was calling the authorities, they allegedly laughed and called her a c*nt. They then collected the evidence and drove off with the goslings, leaving more behind. While this witness surely saved the lives of several families at her apartment complex, at least seven babies are now missing and all remain in danger should these thugs return. Humane Long Island (formerly known as Long Island Orchestrating for Nature - LION) has reached out to Michele Cassata of the Cassata Organization who owns Victorian Gardens and at least six other luxury apartment complexes on Long Island, however, she has not returned any of our calls or emails.  Please join us in urging Ms. Cassata and the Cassata Organization to immediately end lethal roundups on their properties and to pursue only humane, nonlethal wildlife management techniques moving forward. Then call Cassata Org at 631-218-6440 and leave them a voicemail at one of their extensions.  You may also join us for a protest outside of Victorian Gardens at 2 Victorian Ct, Holtsville, NY 11742 on Thursday, May 19 at noon! https://www.facebook.com/events/3225448384403744

Defend the Right to Seek Asylum

Although President Biden promised a more humane asylum system as a candidate, his administration is continuing the U.S. government’s attacks on asylum. A new agreement  will send many Venezuelan migrants to Mexico without an opportunity to seek first asylum in the United States. Currently, there are over 7 million Venezuelan refugees fleeing human rights abuses and a humanitarian crisis. The 1951 UN Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the Refugee Act of 1980 protect refugees and asylum seekers fleeing oppression. Our Christian faith urges us to generously welcome asylum seekers, compelling us to “love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Deuteronomy 10:19). But instead of welcoming, our government expels those seeking to exercise their right to protection.   Tell President Biden: Defend the Right to Seek Asylum Since March of 2020, a CDC directive under Title 42 of the U.S. code has empowered border patrol agents to expel migrants who would normally be detained. Mexico formerly would only receive migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. Under the recent agreement, Mexico will now accept migrants from Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba who are expelled under Title 42.  In exchange, the U.S. will admit a limited number of Venezuelans who meet specific requirements. Program participants must have a sponsor in the U.S. and provide their own air travel. Individuals who have been deported from the United States within the last five years or who entered Panama or Mexico illegally since the day of the announcement are ineligible. These difficult requirements do not provide a pathway for impoverished Venezuelans who do not have ties to the United States or who cannot pay for their own plane tickets.    The need for admission into the United States is also far greater than the program allows: the U.S. will only accept 24,000 Venezuelans for humanitarian parole, far fewer than the 53,333 who attempted to enter the country in August of 2022 alone.  Thus, while the humanitarian parole program will certainly help to provide refuge to some Venezuelans, the expansion of Title 42 makes seeking asylum much more difficult for those who do not meet the program’s qualifications.   Tell President Biden: Defend the Right to Seek Asylum Current U.S. asylum policy is fundamentally flawed. Providing humanitarian parole to a limited number of migrants on a country-specific and preferential basis is inadequate when people are fleeing violence, disaster and hunger globally. President Biden should end Title 42 as a migration management tool. Asylum policy must include investments in just and equitable procedures that can be applied across nationalities with humanitarian principles at their core.   The U.S. should share in the responsibility to protect and assist our Venezuelan neighbors. God is calling us to open our arms and extend a wide welcome to our neighbors who are seeking a safe place to live and raise their families.

Election season returns

Stated Clerk urges voters to think before they cast their ballot

Rick Jones & Randy Hobson | Office of the General Assembly - November 2, 2022

Louisville

The mid-term elections are often seen as the voters’ report card for sitting presidents and their political parties. The volatility shown these past two years has many wondering what message will be sent to Washington.

The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), spent several years as head of the Office of Public Witness on Capitol Hill.  He offers his thoughts on what Presbyterians should look for when they go to the polls this month and the importance of integrity for this year’s elections.

Presbyterians for Earth Care - 2 PEC Webinars Coming Up in Nov AND Climate on the Ballot Recording Available

Introduction to Earth Care Congregations   Webinar Hosted by PEC in Partnership with PC(USA)   Is your church interested in becoming more involved as stewards of God’s earth? The Presbyterian Hunger Program’s Office of Sustainable Living & Earth Care Concerns provides an opportunity to certify your congregation as an Earth Care Congregation. Earth Care Congregations are congregations that have committed to the “Earth Care Pledge” and accomplished a specific number of actions toward caring for God’s earth in four categories: worship, education, facilities, and outreach. Congregations earning 25 points in each of the four categories will be certified as Earth Care Congregations and receive various honors. Congregation members will also be invited to participate as individuals by completing similar actions in their homes. In this webinar, Jessica Maudlin will introduce the Earth Care Congregation Certification, explain how churches are certified, and share examples of activities churches are already doing. Carol Dunn, an elder of an Earth Care Congregation, will share her experience of becoming certified. The webinar will highlight resources and ways the program is available to support interested churches. A time for discussion will follow the presentation. Date: Thursday, November 3, 2022 Time: 7:00 pm Eastern (4:00 pm Pacific) Presenters: Jessica Maudlin and Carol Dunn Click Here to REGISTER   Do It All for the Glory of God: Eating for a Healthy Climate   Webinar Hosted by PEC   Most are aware that combustion of fossil fuels is the dominant cause of climate change, but did you know there is another, largely hidden source responsible for as much as one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions?  Scientists have shown that even if fossil fuels were eliminated immediately, emissions from the global food system alone would make it impossible to prevent catastrophic climate change. This presentation will explain how food is contributing to the climate emergency, and offer science-based guidelines for making everyday dietary choices to reduce our climate “foodprint”. By being mindful of the environmental impact of our diets, our meals can become a joyful expression of our Christian values, honoring the right of children and all Creation to a safe climate and a livable future, all for the glory of God. Date: Tuesday, November 15, 2022 Time: 7:00 pm Eastern (4:00 pm Pacific) Presenter: Dr. Suzanne Jones, Montclair Presbyterian Church Click Here to REGISTER WEBINAR RECORDING NOW AVAILABLE for Climate on the Ballot - Faithful Voting Tuesday!   Click Here for Recording & Resources

Change.org Petition: Chickens in cages - Students demand that Compass Group follow through on its animal welfare promises!

Compass Group, the largest food provider in the US, is not following through on its animal welfare standards. Compass was one of the first companies to adopt the Better Chicken Commitment. But in Compass slaughterhouses, chickens are violently shackled upside down, shocked, and cut open at the throat. This happens while they are still conscious and able to feel pain. Rachel started her petition because her school, Cal Poly Humboldt, employs Compass as their food service provider. As someone who uses their services, she is demanding Compass follow through on their animal welfare policies. Show your support by signing Rachel’s petition now. Students demand that Compass Group follow through on its animal welfare promises! 1,500 have signed Rachel Clift’s petition. Let’s get to 2,500!

Compass Group is the foodservice provider for my school, Cal Poly Humboldt. Although Compass Group was one of the first companies to adopt the Better Chicken Commitment (BCC)--a set of animal welfare standards aimed at improving how chickens are raised for meat--Compass has done little to show customers how they actually plan to fulfill these promises. Additionally, Compass Group continues to support the cruel crating of mama pigs throughout multiple pregnancies. Compass Group needs to follow in the footsteps of the many businesses that have already made meaningful progress toward fulfilling and reporting on their own animal welfare commitments.
