Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly Approves Landmark Climate and
Environmental Justice Actions
The 227th General Assembly of PCUSA has approved three major climate and environmental justice initiatives that together represent one of the denomination's most significant commitments to creation care in its history.
Through approval of overtures CLJ-02, On Changing Course for a Green Future; CLJ-03, On Establishing the Green Future Fund; and CLJ-04 On Regenerative Farming, commissioners voted to align the church's investments, ministries, and stewardship practices more closely with its long-standing commitment to environmental justice. All three overtures received strong committee support and were adopted through the Assembly's Consent Agenda.
A Broader Commitment to Creation Care -
Taken together, the three actions represent a comprehensive approach to the church's environmental witness: withdrawing investments from industries driving climate change, creating long-term financial support for climate justice and renewable energy projects, and encouraging practical stewardship through healthier agricultural practices.
The divestment decision concludes one of the denomination's longest-running advocacy efforts. The campaign began in 2013, inspired by growing scientific consensus regarding climate change, ecumenical leadership from other denominations, and increasing public concern about the environmental and social impacts of fossil fuel extraction. Although advocates experienced significant setbacks over the past decade, they continued organizing across presbyteries while building broader support throughout the church.
Presbyterians for Earth Care calls on members throughout the denomination to give thanks for these actions while continuing to work toward a just transition away from fossil fuels, expanded renewable energy, healthier agricultural systems, and sustainable ways of living that reflect God's call to care for creation and for communities most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.
