This gathering marked 20 years since Hurricane Katrina and brought together faith leaders, frontline organizers, and community members to reflect, remember, and resist. We lifted up a hard truth: storms, floods, and pollution crises in the Gulf South are not “natural disasters,” but the result of political and corporate decisions that put profit over people. Voices like Angela Chalk, Sharon Lavigne, Bette Billiot, Scott Eustis, and others shared powerful testimony. Former Vice President Al Gore joined us as well, affirming the global significance of Gulf South leadership. The day was grounded in music, poetry, food, and an altar we created together—reminding us that resistance is sacred, and that telling the truth in community is a form of healing. For me, this work is deeply personal. I’ve lived with asthma since childhood, and I know what it means when even the air we breathe is unjust. Faith is what reminds me that justice is sacred, and that another world is possible. The witness we shared at Katrina 20 will travel to COP30 in Brazil with a clear message: frontline communities in the Gulf South are not sacrifice zones. Our lives, our stories, and our faith must shape the path forward. This is an abridged version of the original blog post written by Eloise Reid. You can read the full post here on the GreenFaith website. ______________________________ Solidarity and Gratitude with our Faiths 4 Climate Justice: Sun Day Co-SponsorsGreenFaith extends deep gratitude and solidarity to our cosponsors whose partnership make Faiths 4 Climate Justice: Sun Day possible as a bold manifestation of interfaith solidarity, spirit and power.
