The Susquehanna Valley Presbytery’s Cabinet is recommending that their Presbytery vote on two overtures for the 2024 PCUSA General Assembly, “Removal of Investments in and Subsidies for Fossil Fuels” and “On Becoming Free from Plastic Pollution,”.  The January 16 Cabinet approved a motion to present these overtures to the Presbytery’s February 10th Assembly to vote to be the originators to submit them to General Assembly or to concur with another presbytery if one submits before Susquehanna Valley Presbytery does.

Pastor Bruce Gillette, chair of Susquehanna Valley Presbytery’s Justice in Mission and Ministry Team and Moderator of Presbyterians for Earth Care, will moderate this January 24 informational conversation. The evening will have time for questions and answers.

Guest Speakers on the Overtures: Presbyterians for Earth Care Members Mark Eakin, Pam McVety, and Fred Milligan.

Reflecting on COP28: The PC(USA) Delegation Shares

January 30, 2024, 7:00PM EST

The first United Nation’s Conference on the Parties (COP) – held in Berlin in 1995– had just 3,969 delegates. Official numbers for attendance at COP28 held this past December in Dubai recorded 97,372, making it the largest in history.

Among those nearly 100,000 delegates at COP28 were:

•  Alethia White, Co-Regional Liaison for Northern and Central Europe,

• Christina Cosby, domestic policy representative in the Office of Public Witness,

• Jed Koball, Joining Hands Catalyst for Extractive Industries, Human Rights and the Environment,

•  Rev. Bill Somplatsky-Jarman, a former staff member for the Presbyterian Committee on Mission Responsibility Through Investment (MRTI) AND Presbyterians for Earth Care’s Western Regional Representative to the Steering Committee

Come hear a first-hand account of what happened at COP28, what we should celebrate, and what action we still need to take from the four PC(USA) delegates.

Feel free to bring your own questions to ask the delegation after their opportunity to share!

Presbyterian Hunger Program’s

Tread Lightly for Lent

Daily Action Calendar

The Presbyterian Hunger Program strives to walk with people in moving towards sustainable choices that restore and protect all of God’s children and creation. As people of faith, we seek to “serve and preserve” God’s world. However, some of our collective choices have led to a changing global climate, which translates to warmer temperatures, rising sea-levels, and severe storms, just to name a few. To turn this tide, we must commit to treading lightly on God’s Earth. In Lent, we slow down, take time, and examine our internal spiritual lives and the way we live out our Christian faith in the world around us. Our hope is that this Lenten calendar will be the beginning of actions intended to create more mindful behaviors throughout the year.  CLICK HERE to download the document.
