Change.org Petition: Khaleesi’s Law- Gun Safety, Negligent Storage of Firearms.

Content Warning: The following contains reference to gun violence.

Last year, 7-year-old Khaleesi had a playdate with a friend. While they were playing, her friend climbed into his dad’s truck and easily accessed a loaded gun. He shot Khaleesi, causing severe injuries and a lifetime of medical challenges. Khaleesi’s mother, Tammy, wants parents to be held responsible for negligent storage of firearms when children are present in a home. Add your name to help Tammy make sure what happened to Khaleesi never happens to another innocent child.

In September of 2021, our daughter Khaleesi (age 8) was shot in the neck while at a playdate by another child (age7). This child climbed into his Dad’s unlocked truck, grabbed the loaded gun off of the front seat, and then shot Khaleesi while she was playing tag with his older sister, her friend.  Khaleesi was life-flighted to Children’s Hospital in Spokane and immediately underwent Surgery to close all bullet wounds in her neck, palet,  tonsils, and jaw she was unresponsive when she got two the hospital she was diagnosed with a gunshot wound to the neck, Maxillary fracture, and Psuedoaneurysim. Khaleesi spent weeks in I.C.U and then had another surgery on her carotid artery for a pseudoaneurysm. She was a healthy normal child before the incident now she has medical appointments quite often we live in fear because we don’t know what the future holds for her lifespan and she has high anxiety due to the trauma she has endured at one point she had oral surgery for her jaw bone falling out of her jaw where the bullet had hit the jaw she now has no teeth on the left side and they are trying to keep her remainder floating jaw from growing and turning her face sideways she will have to have bone splicing when she is old enough and continuously monitored for the artery. Khaleesi still faces many challenges due to this negligence and will face them for the rest of her life emotionally as well as physically. This entire event has created an injustice because no laws are in place for the children of Idaho which hold parents responsible for the safety of their firearms when children have the potential to be present. The prosecutor in our daughter Khaleesi’s case was unable to find enough unquestionable proof to prosecute this negligent family.  It is a miracle that Khaleesi is alive, however, the next child may not be so fortunate. Idaho needs to step up and create a law that could help prevent unnecessary harm to children under the age of 18 from the discharge of a firearm because of negligence with gun safety. We are not trying to advocate against guns or gun owner’s rights we are advocating for minor children under the age of 18 as well as for the parents to have accountability for their guns. Making this a Law for the state of Idaho will help other families such as ours who without this Law will get no justice.
