Yesterday, the Democratic Party won what is projected to be the largest popular-vote victory for either party since 1976. Across the country, people organized their communities and exercised their power at the ballot box, despite threats and rumors designed to take away their vote. Even as the Department of Justice threatened election officials and state leaders with last-minute lawsuits, those officials remained undeterred in carrying out their duties without fear or favor. As the results were reported last night, we collectively witnessed the fruition of countless hours of planning, training, and activism in the defense of a multiracial, pluralistic democracy under direct assault.

As we absorb the results of this election, we must focus on the communities across the country that came together to actively work to change the conditions that still see so many people targeted with violence. With federal police and the military occupying their communities, with the Justice Department targeting their organizations, and the White House itself aiming dehumanizing rhetoric at them, people came together to show bravery and compassion without hesitation.

As we pursue the beloved community, let us remember that our faith demands both worship on Sunday and a commitment to honoring the image of God in every person. In the days ahead, debates about the best path forward will continue. But we should hold on to the sense of connection and joy reflected in such an emphatic rebuke of cruelty. In this moment, we, as people of faith, have an opportunity to create a world that we all deserve.

In the News

Results from yesterday’s midterm election continue to roll in from around the country, solidifying this cycle as a historic landslide for Democrats. As of early this morning, Democrats were projected to win at least 54 and as many as 56 U.S. Senate seats and about 255 to 265 House seats, easily capturing the majorities in both chambers. Democrats are also on track to win the national House popular vote by about 13 percentage points, the widest margin since the post-Watergate elections of 1974 and 1976.
Black candidates for governor broke barriers in four states on Tuesday, more than the total number of Black governors elected in U.S. history before this year. In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms became the first Black woman elected governor of a U.S. state. Democrats David Crowley and Aaron Ford won in Wisconsin and Nevada, and Republican Byron Donalds in Florida, becoming the first Black Republican elected governor. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, Democrat Stacey Plaskett, the territory’s nonvoting delegate to Congress, was elected its first woman governor, making her the first Black woman elected to lead a U.S. territory.
Voters also made other historic firsts. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed will be the first Muslim U.S. Senator. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa will be the state’s first Latina governor. In Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan will be the first Native American woman elected to the Senate. In New Hampshire, Chris Pappas will be the first openly gay man elected to the Senate. All four are Democrats.
Chuck Schumer, the likely Senate majority leader, vowed Wednesday that Congress will be a check on President Trump. “Whenever Trump defies the will of the American people or the law, we will launch investigations, take him to court, and entangle him in legislative razor wire,” he said. Minnesota Sen-elect Peggy Flanagan declared that “The grift stops now.” Other victorious Democrats struck a more conciliatory tone, like Kansas senator-elect Adam Hamilton, a United Methodist pastor, who said on “CBS Mornings” that he would do what he could to bring decency and bipartisanship to the Senate.
Reactions to the election results are coming in from around the world. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said, "The world has an opportunity now to unite around the issue that is affecting us all, and that’s the cost of living,” and noted the need to end the wars in Iran and Ukraine to make that happen. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said, “I do think this is going to introduce a new era in world relations,” adding that he hoped for “a coming together of minds” between the two countries.

Everyday People

I am overwhelmed by the way democracy played out yesterday. Serving as a poll chaplain in Pennsylvania, I watched people press their way to the polls, and it reminded me how individual and communal needs intersect. It was an honor to serve.

I am grateful for everyone who worked tirelessly this year to make sure people could vote safely. I am also grateful for the great cloud of witnesses who pushed us and cheered us on.

Election officials and volunteers, grassroots organizers, faith organizations and faith leaders, secular pro-democracy groups and everyday people: We showed up and showed out.

Now is the time to celebrate the beauty of humanity coming together to make the world a better place. Before we move on to what still needs to be done, let us celebrate what our eyes have seen and our ears have heard. The threat of this country coming one step away from authoritarian rule drew generations to the polls in ways that, I pray, will resonate for generations to come. I want to celebrate the everyday people who made all of this happen, so we can all rejoice.

In our celebration, let us not forget the God of all creation, who gives us life and breath and our very being; the God who has been with us from the very beginning and who strengthens us for the hard work of co-creating a world where all people can thrive.

I close with Psalm 8 as an offering of praise to the same God who set the stars in the sky.

Psalm 8 (NRSVUE)

O Lord, our Sovereign,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!

You have set your glory above the heavens.

Out of the mouths of babes and infants

you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,

to silence the enemy and the avenger.

When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,

the moon and the stars that you have established;

what are humans that you are mindful of them,

mortals that you care for them?

Yet you have made them a little lower than God

and crowned them with glory and honor.

You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,

all sheep and oxen,

and also the beasts of the field,

the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,

whatever passes along the paths of the seas.

O Lord, our Sovereign,

how majestic is your name in all the earth!
