Presbyterians for Earth Care - THIS TUESDAY: Climate & Weather Webinar, PEC Lenten Devotions, Overtures News, This Sunday Worship Helps

WEBINAR THIS TUESDAY!

Climate and Weather: How extreme global weather patterns are related to the current climate crisis.

Date: Tuesday, Feb. 13th

Time: 7:30 pm EST (4:30 PST)

Presenter: Colin Evans, Ph.D., Cornell University

Many wonder why we continue to experience brutal cold snaps across the country, even as the global climate warms.  Colin will explain this phenomenon, as well as share evidence that shows that the climate is in crisis regardless of extreme local weather evidence to the contrary.  He will also offer discussion of how to talk to people about the science behind the climate crisis and how it affects them personally, in addition to how we can all make a difference as individuals as well as collectively.

Climate scientist Dr. Colin Evans received his Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science from Cornell University in 2022 and currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Northeast Regional Climate Center. His interests are in climate change science, education, policy, and data visualization.  He has taught two previous PEC webinars.  Learn more about his research on his climate website HERE.

The PEC 2024 Lenten Devotional is Here !

New Lenten Devotions based on Revised Common Lectionary texts from Creation Care perspectives. We hope this resource will help preachers, lectionary Bible study groups, families and individuals with new insights on these beloved texts during this special season. We are especially grateful for the Spanish translation of the devotions provided by Gloria D. Lozada De-Jesús and The Rev. Dr. Neddy Astudillo of Red Presbiteriana para el Cuidado de la Creación.

Please consider sharing a link to the devotional in an email to your church members, family and friends.  You can also ask your Presbytery to share the links with churches and pastors.

PEC’s Overtures - Approved by 1st Presbytery!

The Presbytery of Susquehanna Valley (NY) voted on February 10 with more than 90%  in favor to recommend PEC’s two overtures, “Removal of investments in and subsidies for fossil fuels” and On Becoming Free from Plastic Pollution to the 2024 PCUSA General Assembly.  PEC Moderator Bruce Gillette made the case by stressing the urgency of the climate crisis using a series of newspaper headlines on scientific studies on the extreme heat and growing number of climate crisis-related natural disasters.  The Rev. Earl Arnold (a retired Presbyterian minister who worked with William Gibson in the past) and Presbytery Co-Stated Clerk Chris Burger voiced their support for the overtures. Other presbyteries are considering these overtures in the coming weeks and months.  Now is the time for you to work for your presbytery to support these important overtures. Here is one slide from the February 10th presentation to make the case for action now.

This Sunday, February 18, is a Great Time to Preach and Sing about Creation

The Revised Common Lectionary for the First Sunday in Lent, February 18, has the first reading bring Genesis 9:9-17, the story of God’s covenant with Noah and “every living creature.”  The biblical text emphasizes four times that the covenant includes animals (not just Noah).  Check out “The Importance of the Noahic Covenant and Its Function as the Basis for Creation Care” thesis by Pei Tsai.   Carolyn Winfrey Gillette wrote this hymn on Genesis 9 and creation care that was originally shared by Presbyterian Outlook magazine.  She gives permission for its free use by PEC members.  The hymn text is on her new hymns website.
