Genesis 3:9
It is good to be in church today and to hear the words, “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” These words remind us that we are mortal, and they also remind us that life is a gift from God. The question is: What do we do in the limited time that God has given us?
In the summer of 2019, I was diagnosed with acute leukemia and, a few months later, I had a bone marrow transplant. The last few years have been challenging ones, but my health has been gradually improving. Through it all, I have been more aware than ever that I am mortal. My life has limits.
But also—I have been reminded that life is a gift from God. Since life is so precious, I want to use it well. It’s a matter of stewardship. I want to use my time to be a good steward of the earth and to care for creation for my children, my grandchildren, all children, all creatures, and future generations.
What experiences in your life have reminded you of your own mortality? What aspects of the climate crisis have caused you to look at the gift of your life in new ways? How have you struggled with the reality of the harm we are causing to the planet? How do you live as a steward of creation— in the ways you use resources, work, volunteer, and advocate?
We hope these devotions will help you in your Lenten journey and inspire you in your care for God’s creation.
Prayer: God, help us to use this wonderful life you have given us to care for your wonderful creation. Amen.

Es bueno estar en la iglesia hoy y escuchar las palabras: “Recordemos que somos polvo y al polvo volveremos”. Estas palabras nos recuerdan que somos mortales y que la vida es un regalo de Dios. La pregunta es: ¿qué debemos hacer en el limitado tiempo que Dios nos ha dado aquí?
En el verano de 2019, fui diagnosticado con leucemia aguda y pocos meses después me hicieron un trasplante de médula ósea. Los pasados años han sido muy retantes, pero mi salud ha mejorado gradualmente. Más que todo, he estado muy consciente de que soy mortal y que mi vida tiene límites.
Pero también sigo recordando que la vida es un regalo de Dios y como es tan preciada quiero usarla bien. Es un asunto de mayordomía. Quiero usar mi estadía siendo un buen mayordomo de la Tierra y para cuidar la creación para mis hijos, mis nietos, para toda la niñez, todas las criaturas y las futuras generaciones.
