You may have heard about the disrespectful and unconscionable recent actions related to trademarking the name of the Federal holiday “Juneteenth” (meant to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African-Americans and celebrate African-American culture) to be used as an ice cream flavor.
This in essence diminishes the historical significance associated with Juneteenth itself, as well as the decades long journey and selfless work of so many involved with finally having it recognized as a Federal holiday. We need to do our part to ensure that the legacy of the name “Juneteenth” perpetually receives the respect it deserves by preventing the name itself, without the inclusion of clarifying wording, before or after, from being used in such a downgraded manner ever again.
