On January 19, the Mission Responsibility Through Investment Committee (MRTI) voted to recommend that the denomination divest from five fossil fuel companies: Chevron, ExxonMobil, Marathon Petroleum, Phillips 66, and Valero Energy. The issue will be before the General Assembly this summer.
“Thank you for this process and for this report,” said Rev. abby mohaupt, co-moderator of Fossil Free PC(USA). “For the magnitude of the divestment that this report is calling for, we commend you. And we’re looking forward to being at GA in a way that is supportive of this report.”
Climate change is an urgent crisis and as people of faith we must do all we can to hold companies in the fossil fuel industry accountable. This MRTI report does that, and we, FFPC(USA), commend and celebrate these efforts and intend to support this recommendation when it is brought forth to the General Assembly.
Even still, Fossil Free PC(USA) remains committed to bold action on every front of the climate justice movement. As such, we will continue to push for categorical divestment from fossil fuels at the GA level, assist individual churches interested in divesting their endowments, and invest our organization's time and financial resources in supporting indigenous and front-line led direct action. |
